World’s first certification for Innovation management professionals

Will a certification create innovation? No, unfortunately it isn't that simple. However, Research Institutes of Sweden (RISE) is launching the world’s first certification course for Innovation management professionals.

Will a certification create innovation? No, unfortunately it isn't that simple. However, Research Institutes of Sweden (RISE) is launching the world’s first certification course for Innovation management professionals.

– An Innovation management professional wears many hats. The role can be focused on developing methods for innovation, coaching others through an established innovation process, or creating an innovation strategy. To receive certification, one must have worked as an Innovation management professional for at least three years, says Anna Mattson, Project Manager at RISE.

Studies conducted by Kairos Future in previous years show that only 25 percent of organizations have a clear innovation framework, though nearly all recognized innovation as essential for survival. However, since then the interest in innovation has grown rapidly, bringing with it a more professional understanding of innovation management. Knowledge, processes, and systems for organizing and managing innovation are a natural part of every organization today.

– Many years ago it was unusual to come across Project Managers, but today nearly every organization has one and the job description is understood by a majority. That same transformation is occurring with Innovation management professionals. Certification is a step towards professionalizing the role, which decreases confusion about the job duties and helps organizations recruit the needed expertise, says Anna Mattson.

The certification consists of a written exam, a case in the form of a description and analysis of an innovation project that you have been involved in, as well as a personal interview. In order to be certified, one must demonstrate adequate experience and not just theoretical knowledge.

Do you want to certify yourself as an Innovation management professional this fall? If interested, contact Anna Mattsson, Project Manager at Research Institutes of Sweden (RISE), at anna.mattson@ri.se. The application process for RISE’s Innovation Leader course opens at the end of October.
